Kibao’s lifeless body was found on Saturday morning “severely beaten” and almost unrecognisable due to the acid poured on his face, local news reported.

Speaking to journalists, CHADEMA chairman Freeman Mbowe narrated that Kibao was travelling by bus from Dar es Salaam to the north-eastern port city of Tanga before he was abducted and taken away from the bus by two armed men, according to eyewitnesses.

“It is obvious that Ally Kibao has been killed,” he said. A full autopsy report would be completed this week, he added.

President Hassan has also condemned the “assassination”, saying on X that she had ordered an investigation into what she described as Kibao’s assassination.

“I have ordered investigative authorities to provide me with a detailed report on this heinous incident.” She added: “Our country is democratic, and every citizen has the right to live. The government I lead does not tolerate such brutal acts.”

However, Chadema’s secretary-general, John Mnyika, has openly alleged that the Tanzania Intelligence and Security Service (TISS) was “the main suspect” behind the killing of Ally Kibao.

According to the Financial Times report, Mnyika claimed President Suluhu Hassan is “the sponsor of the TISS”, and her influence will limit the capacity of the Police authorities to carry out a proper investigation of the gruesome murder of his party member.

Some experts have even opined that the incident will hurt the chances of the President’s political party (Chama Cha Mapinduzi) succeeding at the local polls in December and the general elections next year.
