The Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL), which operates and maintains all types of telecommunications networks, including ICT systems and services, within and outside the United Republic of Tanzania, has announced plans to construct more than 1,400 communication towers across the country to strengthen national network coverage and support the digital economy.

According to the Tanzania Invest news service, TTCL Director General Moremi Marwa announced this at the recent CEOs Forum 2025 in Arusha, which gathered over 650 senior executives from more than 300 public institutions.

Specifically, he indicated that the rollout will begin with 626 towers in the 2025/2026 financial year, followed by an additional 850 towers in 2026/2027. All 626 towers planned for this year should be operational by June 2026.

Marwa noted that the initiative aims to extend communication services to rural and underserved areas that private operators typically avoid due to limited commercial viability, adding that TCCL continues to receive substantial government investment to expand digital services.

Indeed, the planned new towers will be directly connected to the National ICT Broadband Backbone, of which TTCL is the sole owner, to provide reliable and high-speed internet services.

Since the programme began six months ago, more than 100 towers have already been completed.

This activity is related to the national digital strategy, launched In 2024 by the President of Tanzania, which aims to accelerate the country’s transition to a digital economy in line with the Tanzania Development Vision 2050, which, in turn, aims to make Tanzania a high-income country with a US$1 trillion economy, top three ranking in Africa for investment and ease of doing business, 90% electricity access, and universal clean water.
