Sustainability Reshapes the Spirits Industry
The spirits industry is evolving. As consumers demand eco-friendly products, brands rethink strategies to balance profit with environmental responsibility.
In an exclusive interview with Africa Business News, two Kenyan industry leaders discuss how sustainability is reshaping the sector.
Kennedy Mutula, Marketing Manager for Spirits at Diageo, shares how East African Breweries PLC (EABL) adapts to eco-conscious consumer demands.
Millicent Jackson, General Manager of Bar Next Door, offers a grassroots perspective from Nairobi’s hospitality scene. Together, they highlight a movement where quality and responsibility go hand in hand.
Circular Economy and Carbon Reduction
Kennedy Mutula sees sustainability as the industry’s new guiding principle. “Consumers aren’t just buying a drink—they’re buying into a purpose,” he says.
At Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), he champions Rudisha, a waste management initiative embracing a circular economy. “We reuse millions of bottles through a Returnable Glass Model, cutting waste and keeping materials in play,” he explains. Unlike the old “take, make, dispose” approach, this system reduces KBL’s environmental footprint and advances net-zero goals.
“We’re not stopping there,” Mutula adds. “Digital campaigns educate consumers on responsible disposal, turning them into sustainability allies.”

Premium brands like Don Julio also embrace sustainability. “Regenerative agriculture reduces carbon emissions in agave farming while supporting Mexican farmers,” he says. Don Julio’s recycling efforts transform broken Blanco bottles into glasses, bowls, and décor across Kenyan outlets. “Customers love the quality and the story—it’s fueling the premium spirits boom.”
Sustainability trends continue to reshape the industry. “Circular packaging, biodegradable bottles, and carbon reduction pledges are becoming standard,” Mutula notes. Consumers seek transparency through QR codes that reveal traceable sourcing and low-emission logistics. “Localized ingredients and renewable energy now define brand identity.”
To balance sustainability with profitability, EABL follows its Spirit of Progress plan. Goals include net-zero carbon emissions in direct operations, a 50% reduction in value chain emissions, and 97% renewable fuel usage via biomass plants by 2026. Water stewardship and zero-waste targets round out the strategy. “We invest in efficiency, technology, innovation, and collaboration,” Mutula explains. “It’s about staying competitive while protecting the planet.”
Grassroots Sustainability in Nairobi’s Bars
Across Nairobi, Millicent Jackson puts these ideas into action. “Nairobi’s waste and water challenges are personal,” she says.
At Bar Next Door, sustainability fuels creativity. Discarded glass bottles, including broken Don Julio Blanco, are melted and reshaped into sleek cocktail glasses, rustic bowls, and serviette holders. “Guests sip from these unique pieces—it sparks conversations,” she shares.
Plastic waste is collected and sent to Mr. Green for recycling. Grey water nourishes plants and flushes toilets. Solar panels power the bar, trimming its carbon footprint. “Every choice we make tackles our city’s challenges head-on,” she adds.

“Reducing waste and using renewables show what’s possible,” she says. Bar Next Door blends sustainability with hospitality, cutting costs while earning loyal patrons who value its ethos. She credits Rudisha as an inspiration. “Seeing big brands like KBL reuse bottles pushes us further. We’re part of something transformative.”
Mutula and Jackson work at different levels, but their vision aligns. “Profit and sustainability are partners,” Mutula says. Sustainability is redefining spirits. Their efforts—from farm to glass—prove the industry can lead a greener future, one sustainable sip at a time.
