Intense fighting erupted near the al-Jili oil refinery, north of Khartoum, as Sudan’s army advanced on the strategic facility in a multipronged offensive against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Witnesses reported heavy clashes between the two forces, plumes of smoke rising, and the army seizing the town’s entrance. According to Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan, the offensive demonstrates the army’s intention to regain as much territory as possible from the RSF. Fighting was also reported in the city of el Fasher, with the army allegedly executing air raids on RSF positions. The conflict, which began in April 2023 between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, has displaced 12 million people and caused tens of thousands of deaths.
