The Spanish Army is training approximately 50 Ukrainian soldiers in the planning and execution of military operations in urban terrain.

The training is taking place at the Almería military base in southern Spain, supported by the Rey Alfonso XIII Brigade.

Prior to this module, Ukrainian troops received training in shooting techniques using various weapon systems, as well as tactics and procedures for conventional combat scenarios in open fields.

“We hope that this year will mark the end of the war and Ukraine’s victory,” said the Spanish Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles during a recent visit to the Almería military base.

The Ukrainian cause “is the cause of all countries that believe in freedom and peace,” she added, highlighting Spain’s support for Kyiv.

EU Training Mission for Ukraine

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, more than 7,000 Ukrainian fighters have been trained by the Spanish Army and Navy.

The initiative is part of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA), which has provided training to around 60,000 Ukrainian troops since its inception in 2022.

Alongside Spain, 24 European nations have joined the EUMAM UA.

In December 2024, the EU announced its plan to train an additional 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers by early this year.

Earlier last year, the European Council extended the mission’s funding for two more years until November 2026, pledging a budget of 409 million euros ($429 million) to support the initiative.
