South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU), formed just seven months ago, remains intact despite internal conflicts and a turbulent start. Notably, the Democratic Alliance (DA) criticized President Cyril Ramaphosa’s unilateral signing of a property expropriation bill without consulting coalition partners, although it supported the bill against external criticism from US President Donald Trump. Beyond this, there have also been clashes over language education policies and Ramaphosa’s conciliatory stance toward Russia. Despite these disagreements, coalition partners continue to meet and negotiate, recognizing that a split could lead to a “doomsday coalition” bolstered by radical-left and populist parties. Analysts expect the coalition, driven in part by big business interests, to persist at least until the next national elections, even if leadership changes occur within the ruling ANC.
