South Africa’s Saltzman-backed Dis-Chem opens 300th store in Mbombela

Dis-Chem, controlled by South Africa’s Saltzman family, has opened its 300th store at The Square in Mbombela, bringing more affordable primary healthcare to the community. The outlet, the 14th in Mpumalanga, reflects the push to reach more South Africans in their everyday lives.

CEO Rui Morais said the milestone reflects the company’s commitment to building an accessible health network. “We are committed to expanding our footprint and to fulfilling our mandate of delivering affordable primary healthcare to more South Africans,” he said.

Dis-Chem builds strength with steady growth

Since listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2016, when it had just over 100 stores, Dis-Chem has steadily grown its network. In the past 18 months alone, it has opened nearly 40 outlets, a faster pace than in previous years.

The expansion has translated into stronger financial results. For the year ending February 2025, revenue rose to R39.2 billion ($2.22 billion), supported by growth in both retail and wholesale operations. Operating profit increased by double digits, and shareholders received a higher dividend—evidence of solid demand and careful cost control.

From pharmacies to healthcare platforms

Dis-Chem today is more than a pharmacy. It operates in-store clinics, has grown its rewards program, and recently partnered with insurer OneSpark to launch Dis-Chem Life, adding financial services to its portfolio. These steps are aimed at keeping customers connected to the brand across different areas of healthcare.

Even with rising competition and regulatory pressures, the company’s distribution strength and shift toward a broader healthcare platform keep it firmly positioned in South Africa’s health sector. Morais said new sites are carefully chosen based on data and local demand, with the focus on growth that also delivers meaningful service to communities.

Dis-Chem revenue rises amid competition

Founded in 1978 by Ivan and Lynette Saltzman, Dis-Chem has become one of South Africa’s most recognizable healthcare retailers. Its latest results show revenue up 8 percent to R39.2 billion ($2.22 billion) in 2024.

The group’s continued expansion comes as rival Clicks also strengthens its presence in primary healthcare. Both companies are competing for customers while navigating closer regulatory oversight, a reminder of the challenges that come with size and influence in South Africa’s healthcare market.
