The Trump administration has moved to exclude South Africa from all G20 activities hosted in the United States next year, marking an unprecedented rupture with the continent’s only representative in the influential economic bloc.

The decision signals the most serious breakdown in relations between the two countries in over a decade and threatens to leave Africa without a voice at one of the world’s most powerful economic forums.

A Dramatic Shift in the G20 Landscape

Trump’s announcement, made on X, stated: “At my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year. South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere, and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”

The United States, under President Trump's leadership, decided to exclude South Africa from the 2026 G20 summit hosted in Miami.

A Dramatic Shift in the G20 Landscape

The US President’s statement represents a major departure from G20 tradition. In the grouping’s two-decade history, no member has ever been excluded from its annual gatherings. South Africa, the only African economy in the bloc, has historically served as a conduit for broader continental priorities, ranging from climate finance to sovereign debt relief.

The 2026 summit is scheduled to take place in Miami and will be hosted at Trump’s Doral golf resort. However, amid all other allegations, the US President specifically claimed Wednesday:

“At the conclusion of the G20, South Africa refused to hand off the G20 Presidency to a Senior Representative from our U.S. Embassy, who attended the Closing Ceremony.”

South Africa responded strongly, rejecting the US claims and emphasizing its rights as a sovereign G20 member.

Pretoria Pushes Back as Relations Continue to Sour

In its defense, South Africa’s Presidency issued a firm response to the US decision on X, underscoring the country’s sovereignty and G20 status:

“As the United States was not present at the summit, instruments of the G20 Presidency were duly handed over to a US Embassy official at the Headquarters of South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation.”

The statement went on to reaffirm South Africa’s status in the bloc:

“South Africa is a member of the G20 in its own name and right. Its G20 membership is at the behest of all other members. South Africa is a sovereign constitutional democratic country and does not appreciate insults from another country about its membership and worth in participating in global platforms.”

It continued on X to address the broader diplomatic context and ongoing efforts to maintain constructive relations:

“It is regrettable that despite the efforts and numerous attempts by President Ramaphosa and his administration to reset the diplomatic relationship with the US, President Trump continues to apply punitive measures against South Africa based on misinformation and distortions about our country.”

A Troubled US–South Africa Relationship

The dispute adds to an already turbulent relationship. The US boycotted the 2025 G20 hosted by South Africa after President Trump leveled claims of “genocide” against White South Africans. In March, Washington expelled South Africa’s ambassador, a rare diplomatic rebuke that further underscored the geopolitical rift.

Meanwhile, CNN reported that the administration appears to be positioning Poland for a more prominent role in the G20. Polish leaders say they were personally encouraged to participate and are promoting their economic credentials as grounds for eventual membership.

Implications for Africa’s Voice on the Global Stage

South Africa’s removal would have far-reaching implications for Africa’s influence in global economic governance. With the African Union only recently securing permanent G20 membership, Pretoria has been central to articulating continental priorities in trade, energy, and climate negotiations.
