According to Statista’s 2025 GDP comparison, South Africa ranks first on the continent with an estimated GDP of about $410 billion. It is followed by Egypt at roughly $347 billion, Algeria at $268 billion, Nigeria at $188 billion, and Morocco at $165 billion.

Beyond headline GDP, the country dominates Africa’s private wealth landscape. Henley & Partners’ Africa Wealth Report estimates that South Africa is home to around 41,100 dollar millionaires and eight billionaires, the largest such concentration on the continent.

The report also counts 112 centi-millionaires, defined as individuals with investable assets exceeding $100 million. Henley & Partners attributes this long-term wealth accumulation to decades of industrial development, a diversified economy, and relatively sophisticated financial services.

Signs of renewed economic confidence have also begun to emerge, with the South African Government News Agency reporting that unemployment fell to 31.9 percent in the third quarter of 2025, a decline of 1.3 percentage points from the previous quarter. Authorities link the improvement to stabilising public finances and ongoing reforms.

The government has pointed to progress in transport restructuring, new access rules for freight rail, and major upgrades at the Durban port as key enablers of economic activity. It has also highlighted that load shedding has not occurred for more than 5 months, crediting expanded energy capacity and improved power-sector management.

International institutions are taking note as the World Bank Group approved a $925 million programme in 2025 to support South Africa’s eight largest metropolitan areas, as part of a broader $3 billion reform package.

The Bank said the funding aims to improve service delivery, upgrade infrastructure, and strengthen accountability in cities that drive a significant share of national output.

The country has also emerged as one of the world’s leading destinations for international offshoring services in 2025, reinforcing its role as a gateway economy for global capital into Africa.
