Senegal-based Sonatel is collaborating with Amazon Web Services to launch AWS Wavelength in Senegal. This is the first AWS Wavelength Zone deployed in West Africa and only the second in Africa, strengthening Senegal’s position as a regional technology hub. This launch is part of the momentum of the “New Technology Deal,” a $1.7 billion initiative supported by the government to accelerate Senegal’s digital transformation.
AWS Wavelength Zones are operated in collaboration with AWS partners, and enable companies to build and deploy applications locally, in a way that meets their data residency and low-latency needs. The AWS Wavelength Zone in Senegal will address critical cloud challenges encountered in highly regulated and trusted sectors such as finance, healthcare, telecommunications, and the public sector that require data to be securely processed and stored locally. It will also deliver optimal performance for use cases where low latency is required, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), gaming or video streaming platforms.
Sonatel will provide customers with a comprehensive support offering for the adoption of AWS services, covering consulting, application migration, cloud resource optimization, and operational support. Sonatel also uses this infrastructure for its own needs, hosting several of its internal applications within the AWS Wavelength Zone, allowing the company to benefit from data residency and low latency, while reducing costs. This choice illustrates Sonatel’s commitment to adopting the solutions it recommends to its customers and to accelerating its own digital transformation through next-generation cloud technologies.
