Senegalese Economist Ndiame Diop Set to Lead World Bank Operations in Nigeria

A Senegalese national, Ndiame Diop, is poised to take over from Shubham Chaudhuri, a U.S. national raised in India, as the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, according to a tweet by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, and confirmed by a World Bank source.

The Minister’s tweet on Monday expressed gratitude to Shubham Chaudhuri for his exceptional service and welcomed Ndiame Diop into the pivotal role. The transition process has commenced, although it is not yet complete.

Shubham Chaudhuri has served as the Country Director for Nigeria since 2019, previously holding the same position in Afghanistan. During his tenure at the World Bank, which began in 2004, he has held various key roles, including Practice Manager for Macroeconomics and Fiscal Management in South Asia and Indonesia. Chaudhuri has also led the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Department for East Asia and the Pacific in Washington DC.

Ndiame Diop took on the role of World Bank Country Director for Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand in 2020.

His responsibilities included managing the World Bank’s programs in these countries and leading policy dialogues with various stakeholders. Diop has over two decades of experience at the World Bank, with expertise spanning East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to his current role, he served as Practice Manager for Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment for East Asia and as Lead Economist for Indonesia, Jordan, and Lebanon.
