The South African Revenue Service has intensified pressure on South African businessman Siviwe Mpengesi, warning that it may seize assets worth about R53 million in an escalating tax dispute.

  • South Africa’s tax authority has escalated its pursuit of businessman Siviwe Mpengesi, warning it may seize assets worth R53 million.
  • The dispute stems from allegedly unfiled returns and years of unpaid tax assessments.
  • Asset seizures could impact multiple companies linked to Mpengesi, not just Chippa United F.C..
  • Mpengesi has not publicly responded as pressure mounts from the South African Revenue Service.

Mpengesi is a well-known figure in South African football and business, best recognised internationally as the owner of Chippa United F.C. in the country’s Premier Soccer League. His profile in sport has often overshadowed the scale of his business interests, which cut across security, logistics and other commercial operations.

According to City Press, the revenue authority has moved beyond routine compliance alerts into formal seizure warnings, typically used when previous negotiations have stalled.

The tax demand is reportedly tied to years of unfiled returns and unpaid assessments.

The escalation raises concerns about the financial health of Mpengesi’s wider business network, with some operations already facing strain. Reports of delayed staff payments at his football academy indicate that stress may be filtering through to ground-level operations.

Tax specialists say asset seizure remains one of the strongest enforcement tools available to SARS when liabilities of this size remain unresolved. If enforced, such an action could affect employees, suppliers and partner organisations linked to Mpengesi’s companies.

Mpengesi and his lawyers have not yet publicly addressed the reported threat. It remains unclear whether they will settle, negotiate terms or challenge the matter in court. For a businessman whose name is deeply tied to South African football and multiple commercial ventures, this marks one of his most consequential financial tests yet.
