Rusagro Holding’s head of sales and trading, Mikhail Rakovetsky, while speaking with journalists during the Tanzania – Russia Business and Investment Forum said the company plans to increase their presence in East Africa and West Africa.
“The African continent has enormous potential for the supply of grains and we plan to increase our presence in the countries of East Africa and West Africa. Tanzania is one of the key destinations for us, as grain supplies to this country are growing year by year,” Rakovetsky said.
Rusagro, a top Russian agricultural company, is a major grain exporter with significant investments in the global grain trade. The group sold 1.149 million tonnes of cereals in 2023, an increase of 165,000 tonnes or 17% on 2022. This includes sales of wheat, which grew 15% to 942,000 tonnes.
Russia has established itself as a reliable partner for Africa and has been a leader in supplying grain to the continent, solidifying its position as the world’s top wheat exporter.
African countries which include Somalia and the Central African Republic received over 50,000 metric tonnes each of grains from Russia earlier this year while other countries which include Mali, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe and Eritrea received 25,000 tonnes each.
This was part of the promises made by the Kremlin during the Russian-African summit held in 2023.
“We seek to actively participate in building a fairer system of the distribution of resources. We are taking maximum efforts to avert a global food crisis.” President Putin said.
