Rheinmetall has announced a partnership with Indra to upgrade the Spanish Leopard 2E combat system, enhancing the tank’s overall operational effectiveness.

A memorandum of understanding was signed to jointly develop a state-of-the-art fire control system and C4I (command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence) system for all Spanish Leopard 2Es.

As the original manufacturer of the Leopard 2’s fire control system, Rheinmetall will apply its expertise in developing advanced electronics and software for defense systems.

Indra will leverage its experience in producing battle management systems, electro-optics, and mission systems for main battle tanks.

“Indra and Rheinmetall are leading defense companies in Europe with a focus on innovative land systems,” a joint statement read. “Both companies are also specialists in high-tech mission equipment and C4I solutions for all military needs.”

This new collaboration builds on their previous partnership, which offered advanced solutions compatible with all versions of the Leopard 2.

About the Leopard 2E

The Leopard 2E is Spain’s version of the Leopard 2A6, designed to deliver superior firepower against increasingly formidable adversaries.

Powered by an MTU MB 873 twin-turbo diesel engine, the tank can reach speeds of 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour on roads and 45 kilometers (28 miles) per hour off-road.

It can travel up to 550 kilometers (341 miles) on paved roads.

The Leopard 2E features enhanced armor for better protection against anti-tank weapons, mines, and improvised explosive devices.

In addition to fire control systems, Madrid plans to replace the tank’s 120mm gun with a more advanced model.

The Spanish military currently operates approximately 230 Leopard 2E tanks across four brigades.
