Residents of Ilaro, the headquarters of Yewa South Local Area of Ogun State, have sought the intervention of Governor Dapo Abiodun after the Odo Fufu road collapsed over the weekend.

The Fufu stream in Ilaro used to have a mini bridge over it for convenient human and vehicular movement within the metropolis, especially for students and staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.

The dilapidated bridge finally broke down over the weekend following a downpour. To avert vehicles plunging into the stream, residents have since barricaded the road, calling on both the state and federal governments to come to their aid.

A resident, Jerry Kusoro, lamented: “The current state of the Double Crown/Odo Fufu/Hosanna Bridge in Ilaro has compounded the already complicated means of livelihood of commuters plying the road on a daily basis. They will have to seek alternative routes to connect with the other parts of the town, which will also come with additional stress and monetary commitment.”

Amos Oguns, an indigene of the ancient town, said: “I heard from a reliable source that Senator Adeola is trying to facilitate the repair of that road through the Ecological Fund. We want him to fast-track the process. The road has totally collapsed, and we want the state government to come to our aid. This is a state road.”

An elderly man, Tunji Alabi, urged the state government to be conscious that schools would soon resume for another session.

“The closure of that road due to its present condition would affect pupils when schools finally resume. Children and teachers who ply that road to access their schools would have to seek other, farther routes. You know how much this would cost with this fuel subsidy removal. We beg the state government to do something to that road before schools resume,” he pleaded.

In July 2023, a vehicle plunged into the stream when a part of the road caved in during a heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, Gov Dapo Abiodun said he would soon commence the renovation of roads across the state.
