There are only a few more days to comment on the implementation of the Faure New Water Scheme (FNWS), a project aimed to provide more drinking water for Cape Town. Have your say by Thursday, 17 April 2025, on whether the scheme should use a municipal-run approach, outsource the operation only, or use public-private partnership (PPP).
The City of Cape Town Water and Sanitation Directorate held the second public information session on 3 April 2025 at Strand Town Hall, where the project team unpacked the plans for the proposed FNWS, a vital part of the City’s action plan to build Cape Town’s water-secure future.

Why your comment is important
While the City is the designated water services provider for Cape Town residents, the nature of the FNWS means it might be more feasible to contract an external company to provide these services for this project. The City is conducting a feasibility study in terms of the Section 78 process of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000 and requires input from the local community. The proposed FNWS will supply an additional 70 to 100 million litres of water daily to Cape Town’s drinking water network, reducing reliance on rainfall-dependent dams. It forms part of the City’s broader strategy to diversify water sources through surface water, desalination, groundwater and reuse. ‘Once this first phase of the public participation process has been concluded, the FNWS project team will finalise the feasibility study and request views and recommendations from National Treasury and from the public again. The feedback will be incorporated into a comprehensive stakeholder engagement report and thereafter the final feasibility report will be submitted to Council for a decision on the best service delivery model for the FNWS.
