South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the G20’s ability to navigate potential disruptions from US President-elect Donald Trump’s “America First” policies. Ramaphosa, whose country took over the G20 presidency from Brazil on Sunday, emphasized a commitment to addressing climate change’s impact on developing nations, despite Trump’s skepticism toward international climate cooperation. He also stated that the G20 will have “sufficient shock absorbers” in place so it can continue functioning with or without America’s support. Trump, who returns to the White House in January, has indicated that his foreign policy will be combative. After pledging to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China on his first day in office, he has threatened to impose similar measures on BRICS nations if the bloc proceeds with its plans to move away from the US dollar for international trade.
