The shift to 6G will demand a complete transformation of today’s communication networks, and the PROTEUS-6G project is leading the way by developing an energy-efficient optical x-haul backbone for future 6G networks, combining software-intelligent control, advanced photonics, and terabit-class transmission.
By leveraging programmable photonic-integrated circuits and real-time orchestration, the project aims to cut power consumption while enabling ultra-high-capacity connectivity to support next-generation services.
Through the introduction of novel photonic filtering techniques, simplified transmitters and receivers, and an AI-enabled unified control platform, PROTEUS-6G delivers faster transmission, lower latency, and intelligent traffic management.
Its architecture can dynamically allocate optical capacity, reroute traffic in real time, and power down idle components to save energy. With speeds reaching multiple terabits per second, the system is tailored for advanced 6G use cases such as large-scale antenna arrays, smart cities, and immersive digital environments.
