The president shared her sentiments at the 60th anniversary celebration of the Tanzanian Police Force, responding to the statement by EU, US, UK and Canadian diplomats on the murder of Ali Mohamed Kibao.
Ali Mohamed Kibao, a member of the main opposition Chadema party’s secretariat, was found dead on Saturday, 7th of August, a day after two armed men dragged him off a bus bound for the northeastern port city of Tanga, according to party chairman Freeman Mbowe.
As a result, the foreign diplomats had urged that an investigation into the murder of the prominent political figure be carried out.
“Murder and disappearances as well as last month’s detentions, beatings and other efforts to disenfranchise citizens ahead of elections should have no place in democracy. These brutal acts undermine rights guaranteed by the Tanzanian constitution. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Kibao and the country for the loss of his life and civic leadership,” the US embassy issued.
However, as reported by the Tanzanian newspaper, The Citizen, the president of the country seemed bewildered by the fact that foreign entities have taken an interest in the politicians death, while the deaths of children and albinos in the East African nation go unnoticed.
President Hassan’s response
“It is surprising that this death has sparked condemnation,” she said. “With some even labeling our government killers, this is not right, we must condemn all such incidents.”
She then pointed out that these diplomats may have expressed their concern rather than airing the stance of their respective governments.
She noted that there is a likelihood that she would be speaking to the heads of states directly rather than the diplomats.
“We’re not here to be told how to run our country,” president Samia stated.
“We have sworn to protect the security of Tanzania and defend the constitution of Tanzania, and we will do everything possible to enhance the protection and security of Tanzania because it is our responsibility, and on this responsibility, we need no direction from anyone,” she added.
She mentioned that there have been two assassination attempts on a certain political leader, and that country was allowed to handle the issue internally.
“When such incidents occur, we do not send our diplomats to issue statements,” she remarked.
The president also noted that the investigation into the killing of Ali Mohamed Kibao, is already on the way, as she expressed concern for all lives lost in her country.
