Powering Kenya’s Digital Future

Huawei and SDTVET Launch Nationwide ICT Training Initiative

Kenya has partnered with global tech giant Huawei to accelerate digital skills development and bridge the country’s ICT talent gap.

The State Department for Technical Vocational Education and Training (SDTVET) signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Huawei during the Southern Africa Region Huawei ICT Competition Award Ceremony.

This strategic collaboration, running from 2025 to 2028, will see the creation of 150 Huawei ICT Academies in TVET institutions across Kenya.

These academies will provide specialized training in networking, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

Huawei plans to certify 1,000 students annually at the Huawei Certified ICT Associate (HCIA) level. It will also train 150 instructors each year through its Training-the-Trainer program.

The initiative includes national job fairs, hands-on workshops, and ICT competitions to link students with career opportunities and foster collaboration between academia and industry.

Closing Kenya’s Digital Skills Gap

This partnership addresses a major national concern: the shortage of digital skills among Kenyan youth.

A recent Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) report shows that 70% of youth lack the technical skills required for digital jobs.

Globally, the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 warns that 50% of employees will need reskilling by 2025, particularly in tech-driven sectors.

By targeting rural and underserved areas, the program aims to democratize access to digital training and promote inclusive development.

SDTVET will select institutions, promote certification programs, and recognize the Huawei Certified Instructor Certificate as a national benchmark.

Dr. Esther Muoria, SDTVET Principal Secretary, called the partnership “a game-changer for Kenya’s youth and economy.”

Huawei Southern Africa Director Xu Yongbo reaffirmed Huawei’s long-term commitment to supporting Kenya’s Vision 2030.

Finally, this initiative is set to boost Kenya’s digital competitiveness and unlock job opportunities in the fast-growing ICT sector.
