The Polish Ministry of Defense has signed a $1.6-billion contract to procure 72 K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers (MRL) from South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace.

The second agreement includes the delivery of a long-range guided missile, CTM-290, and transfer of technology of the MRL launch modules.

“This contract signifies our dedication to supporting the enhancement of security in Poland and the region, irrespective of political and societal changes,” Poland Daily 24 quoted President and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace Jaeil Son as saying.

“Hanwha Aerospace is proud of our ongoing dedication to delivering deterrence solutions to regions with urgent demands.”

$22 Billion Framework Agreement

The contract is part of an estimated $22 billion framework agreement between the South Korean and Polish governments in 2022.

The agreement included the purchase of K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers, FA-50 light attack aircraft, and 288 Chunmoo systems.

Poland agreed on terms to acquire 218 Chunmoos in 2022, receiving the first system in August 2023.

Financing Not Secured

However, financing for a majority of the agreement still needs to be secured, according to Defense News.

The latest contract will also take effect after a separate financial contract is signed in November, Reuters wrote, citing Hanwha.

According to The Korea Economic Daily, the deal comes with the condition that the Korean government would financially assist Poland through loans.
