The Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation has in recent weeks conducted oversight visits to several key water and sanitation infrastructure projects across the country. On 9 October 2025, the committee toured the Central Basin Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) treatment plant in Germiston, operated by Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA).

Leading the visit were TCTA Chief Executive, Percy Sechemane, and Board Chairperson, Precious Sibiya, who reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to sustainable water infrastructure delivery. The committee received a detailed presentation and undertook a site inspection, engaging robustly with the TCTA team on project implementation and operational details.

Sibiya emphasised the importance of collaboration between TCTA and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in achieving long-term water security.
The oversight programme also extended to KwaZulu-Natal, where earlier in the week the committee visited the Darvill Waste Water Treatment Site of uMngeni-uThukela Water. At this location, TCTA presented an update on the uMkhomazi Water Project – a major bulk water supply initiative implemented by TCTA on behalf of DWS.
On uMkhomazi, the committee encouraged TCTA to continue strengthening its stakeholder consultations including the ongoing engagements with key government departments like the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, to secure broader support.
