The UK’s Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) agency has sold three refurbished Landing Craft Air Cushion (Light) hovercraft to the Pakistan Navy.

Previously operated by the Royal Marines, the hovercraft were decommissioned in 2021 and later refurbished in 2022 by UK-based Griffon Marine Support under a contract managed by DE&S Boats.

The sale, which includes associated spare parts, was completed by the DE&S Exports and Sales Team, which is responsible for generating revenue through the sale of surplus defense equipment.

“This sale continues a long history of excellent defense equipment sales with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and reaffirms our positive defense relations,” head of Exports and Sales at DE&S Commodore Richard Whalley said.

“By transferring these proven assets, we are supporting the Pakistan Navy’s ability to enhance its coastal and amphibious operations, supporting our shared goal of maintaining global security, as well as providing a return for the UK’s defense budget.”

Hovercraft Enhance Amphibious, Coastal Capabilities

Capable of operating on both land and water, the LCAC(L) will strengthen the Pakistan Navy’s shallow-water and littoral mission capabilities.

The craft is designed to transport troops, vehicles, and equipment from ship to shore.

Its high speed and versatility across various terrains make it suitable for missions including coastal patrol, humanitarian assistance, and rapid deployment operations.

With a 1,046-kilometer (650-mile) coastline, Pakistan requires mobile platforms for quick-reaction force deployment, maritime patrols, and emergency aid delivery.

“The Pakistan Navy values its defense cooperation with the UK, as seen through joint exercises, training exchanges, defense acquisitions, and collaborative efforts in maritime security,” a Pakistan Navy spokesperson said.

“Our recent acquisition of hovercraft from the UK will enhance our defense capabilities, particularly in maritime security and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.”
