Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has affirmed he will remain head of government rather than preside over parliament, following his party’s landslide win in the November 17 snap parliamentary elections. The ruling Pastef party, led by Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, secured 130 out of 165 seats, one of the largest majorities in Senegal’s history. This victory prompted debate over Sonko’s political role, with some stakeholders suggesting that he step down from his position as prime minister and take over as leader of parliament. This, they argued, will help ensure institutional balance and avoid potential executive conflicts. However, Sonko, instrumental to Faye’s election, emphasized his commitment to supporting the president’s administration. He then resigned as an MP and announced that work had begun “at the prime minister’s office.”
