The Deputy Governor of Osun State, Kola Adewusi, has clarified the state government’s decision to move the airport project from its initial site in Ido-Osun to Ede.
Adewusi shared these details during a live radio current affairs program in Osogbo on Wednesday.
He explained that the land designated for the project in Ido-Osun was insufficient to accommodate an international airport of such scale
The residents of Ido-Osun protested the airport’s relocation on Tuesday, expressing their discontent with the state government’s decision. They characterized the move as unfair and discriminatory.
In a statement signed by Chief Oyewale Basiru Oyeleke (Eesa of Ido-Osun), Elder T.A. Adeleye (President of the Ido-Osu Development Union), Alhaji Gbadebo Ajao, and Abiodun Awolola, the community urged the state government to reconsider its decision.
Adewusi further stated that continuing the project in Ido-Osun would require significant financial compensation for affected community members.
He remarked, “In today’s world, we must approach issues with a practical mindset. The Airforce base is nearby and will remain operational, but it is not suitable for establishing an airport. This consideration is crucial. Ignoring it is part of the challenges Nigeria faces today.”
He added, “I regret to say that if our previous leaders had thought more innovatively, they might have addressed the challenges we face now. We need to have foresight. If we proceed with the project in Ido-Osun and later find that it cannot support an international airport due to inadequate facilities, what will we do then?”
Adewusi also mentioned that investigations had disproven claims about a ditch on the proposed land, indicating that it could not accommodate the required runway length.
“There is a need for future planning. From what I understand, there is a ditch that would incur substantial costs if the project were to continue there. The necessary runway length of 3.5 km cannot be achieved at the current site, necessitating the search for more suitable land.”
“It is not due to any other reason. Are the people of Ido-Osun not part of Osun State? We have no issues with anyone there. Their late king was an ally of the government. There is no need to inject sentiment into this matter.”
“If those opposing the airport’s relocation can secure enough land in Osogbo, why not? Many people are unaware that the governor does not let sentiment influence his decisions.”
