The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has initiated the upgrading of Airport Road lighting with intelligent Smart Light Emitting Diode (Smart LED) lights.

This move is part of the vision to transform the FCT into a modern city that complements the ongoing massive infrastructural development.

The project, awarded by the FCT Administration, aims to replace conventional High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights with Smart LED lights, aligning the nation’s capital with other developed countries’ entry and exit points.

According to Bro Felix Obuah, the coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), plans are underway to migrate all major roads and streets in Abuja to smart LED lighting. The project, awarded to Concrete Thinking Limited, has already commenced, starting from the Airport Road area to the central area of the FCT.

One of the features of the LED lighting system, highlighted by Executive Director of Tejaff Multi-Concept Limited, Mrs Ronke Ozoh, is its significantly lower energy consumption while producing the same amount of luminosity. This upgrade is expected to reduce operations and maintenance costs by up to 60 percent.

Furthermore, the smart LED streetlight system enables remote management of streetlight assets, ensuring enhanced accuracy in energy consumption and detection of faulty bulbs from a central control unit.

The initiative has been praised by Abuja resident, Mr. Lennox Adigwe, who called on the Minister of the FCT to extend the upgrade to other parts of the city, including Constitution Road (B12), Independence Road (B6), and other areas in need of improvement. He highlighted the project’s potential to enhance the aesthetics of the FCT, boost the night economy, create jobs, and improve the safety of residents.
