In response to rising electricity costs and frequent power outages, Nigerian Breweries Plc has received authorization to generate its own power at its facilities in Abia, Oyo, and Enugu states.
Overall, Nigerian Breweries is set to produce up to 41MW across four locations.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced this in a report, indicating that the permits were issued in the third quarter of 2024.
Following the enactment of the Electricity Act 2023, numerous companies are opting to disconnect from the national grid and produce their own electricity.
According to NERC, permits for captive power generation are granted to organizations that plan to own and operate power plants solely for their own use, meaning that the electricity generated will not be sold to any third parties.
The commission noted that it has approved captive power generation permits for 11 applicants, with a total capacity of 63.36 megawatts.
Also, six Nigerian universities and the Nigerian Defence Academy also got nod o generate captive electricity.
