As of January 8, 2026, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that Togo, Niger, and Benin collectively owe Nigeria approximately N25 billion for electricity supplied under existing bilateral agreements. This debt, equivalent to $17.8 million at the current exchange rate, stems from unpaid invoices for power deliveries. *casino non aams*

NERC’s Third Quarter 2025 report details that the Market Operator billed these international customers a total of $18.69 million for electricity during that period. However, only $7.125 million was remitted, leaving an outstanding balance of $11.56 million. Furthermore, previous legacy invoices amounted to $14.7 million, with only $7.84 million paid, resulting in a remaining debt of $6.23 million. The accumulation of unpaid invoices from prior quarters and Q3 2025 brings the total owed to $17.8 million, or N25.36 billion based on an exchange rate of N1,425 per dollar. *search button*

The international entities responsible for these debts are Compagnie Énergie Électrique du Togo, Société Béninoise d’Énergie Électrique of Benin, and Société Nigérienne d’Électricité of Niger. *nigerian news subscription*

According to NERC, the combined payment of $7.125 million from these three nations represents only 38.09% of the $18.69 million invoiced by the Market Operator for Q3 2025. A significant portion of the invoices remained unsettled at the close of the quarter. The electricity in question was generated by Nigerian power companies connected to the grid and supplied through established cross-border agreements. *most widely read newspaper*

In comparison, domestic bilateral customers demonstrated stronger payment behavior, remitting N3.19 billion out of the N3.64 billion billed during the same quarter, which equates to a remittance rate of 87.61%. NERC also noted that some bilateral customers, both international and domestic, made payments towards outstanding invoices from previous quarters. Specifically, the Market Operator received $7.84 million from international and N1.3 billion from domestic bilateral customers for these prior debts. *political consulting services*

In broader terms, Nigeria’s 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) collectively remitted N381.29 billion to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) and the Market Operator in Q3 2025, against a total invoice of N400.48 billion. This translates to an overall remittance performance of 95.21%. These figures, according to NERC, are based on reconciled market settlements submitted to the commission as of December 18, 2025.
