Nigeria has intensified efforts to combat oil theft, dismantling 56 bunkering sites and recovering 1.2 million liters of stolen crude oil in a recent crackdown. The crackdown included the destruction of 15 illegal refineries in Bayelsa State. Authorities also arrested 17 suspects and seized vehicles and refining equipment. Despite being Africa’s largest crude oil producer, Nigeria loses billions annually to oil theft, which undermines exports, government finances, and environmental health. Experts highlight the social and economic injustices in the oil-producing Niger Delta as a root cause, citing neglect, lack of infrastructure, and environmental degradation. Financial consultant Umaru Ahmadu warns that theft will persist unless these issues are addressed. Meanwhile, critics argue that political will and accountability are essential to tackling the problem.
