In the first quarter of 2025, Nigeria’s electricity generation experienced a 10.92% increase, fueled by enhanced operational capacity and the availability of thermal and hydropower plants feeding electricity into the grid. This information comes from the latest report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for Q1 2025.

The total energy generated reached 10,304.47 gigawatt-hours (GWh), up from 9,289.95 GWh in the previous quarter.

This growth indicates improved performance across various plants, supported by better grid dispatch conditions. NERC reported a significant rise in average hourly generation, which increased by 13.39% to 4,770.59 megawatt-hours per hour (MWh/h), compared to 4,207.41 MWh/h in Q4 2024. This marks an increase of 563.18 MWh/h in average hourly output.

“The hourly generation and total generation rose by 13.39% and 10.92%, respectively, in Q1 2025 compared to Q4 2024. The hourly generation increased from 4,207.41 MWh/h in Q4 2024 to 4,770.59 MWh/h (+563.18 MWh/h). Meanwhile, total generation grew from 9,289.95 GWh in Q4 2024 to 10,304.47 GWh (+1,014.52 GWh) in Q1 2025. This quarterly increase in generation is linked to the rise in cumulative available generation capacity of the grid-connected plants,” the report stated.

During this quarter, 19 power plants enhanced their output, contributing to the overall increase in generation capacity.
