Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima, while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, advocated for full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), projected to elevate Africa’s economy to $29 trillion by 2050. Shettima emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging the AfCFTA for economic transformation and shared prosperity. He also noted the West African country’s potential for digital empowerment thanks to its population growth and expanding digital landscape, including 163 million internet users. Shettima pointed out Africa’s potential to address global talent shortages, due to its large youth population, and transform its economic trajectory in the knowledge-driven era. The WEF President Børge Brende echoed Shettima’s sentiments, underscoring the demographic advantages of Africa. He also stated that the AfCFTA has the potential to catalyze intra-African trade and potentially grow it by 50%.
