Google, in partnership with the Earth Fire Alliance and Muon Space, has launched the first satellite in a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered wildfire detection system called FireSat.

The initiative aims to deploy over 50 satellites equipped with advanced thermal imaging and artificial intelligence to identify wildfires within 15–20 minutes of ignition.

Unlike traditional satellites that may take hours to deliver data, FireSat’s real-time capability allows it to spot fires as small as those within a classroom and immediately alert emergency responders. The system’s AI can distinguish between real wildfires and false alarms, such as industrial heat or clouds, significantly improving accuracy. This technology arrives at a pertinent time, where climate change is intensifying wildfire risks worldwide, especially in regions like California and the Mediterranean. By combining space-based thermal sensing with machine learning (ML), FireSat promises faster, smarter responses that could potentially save lives, reduce damage, and protect ecosystems. The first satellite is already operational, with full constellation deployment expected in the coming years.
