NCIC; Media Plays A Key Role In Facilitating Meaningful Transgenerational Conversations
NCIC together with Kenya Editors held a discussion on how the media can play a key role in facilitating meaningful transgenerational conversations.
By facilitating constructive dialogue, shaping public perception, and fostering innovation, the media helps to create a cohesive society.
It also plays an indispensable role by bridging generational gaps, empowering youth, promoting inclusivity and encouraging accountability.

Speaking during the meeting, NCIC chairman Rev.Dr. Samuel Kobia noted that “We acknowledge today’s rapidly evolving society, and the pivotal role of the media in shaping conversations across generations. As we navigate the complexities of our national identity and collective future, particularly in a diverse nation like ours, the media emerges not merely as a tool for information dissemination but as a vital catalyst for meaningful dialogue between generations. The media plays a crucial role in narrative, acting as a conduit for the voices of our youth while also providing a platform for dialogue that transcends generational divides. The following are ways in which the media can be part of this journey:”

There is need to empower youth voices. The youth are active participants in shaping public narrative. They challenge the status quo and bring a fresh perspective to long standing issues.
Kobia observed that “The Gen-Zs awakened the conscience of the nation. We started seeing a change of behaviour in our politicians. If politicians behave well in this country, there will be a difference in the building of this nation.”
“You cannot trust the outcome if you are not included in the dialogue process. We need to engage the youth from the beginning in order for them to own the outcomes of the process.” He added
In an era where Gen-Z is emerging as a significant force for change, the media provides a platform for their voices to resonate.
Young people are not just passive consumers of media; they are active participants in shaping narratives. Through social media campaigns, blogs, and podcasts, they challenge the status quo and bring fresh perspectives to long-standing issues.
This empowerment is crucial for fostering a sense of ownership among the youth, encouraging them to engage in the national discourse.

NCIC Commissioner Farah Abdulaziz.
“The NCIC Act provides various ways of dealing with issues of incitement and hate speech through conciliation, wall of fame and shame among others. Hate speech has moved to social media, and it is upon us to make responsible use of social media to capture the voices of different generations through strategic partnerships.” said NCIC Commissioner Farah Abdulaziz.
In addition, Ms. Rosalia Omungo, CEO Kenya Editors Guild said “Capacity building and sensitization of journalists in the area of identifying hate speech is key, and we look forward to partnering with the commission to build capacity for journalists in this area. The media plays a significant role in shaping the agenda, and by extension, influencing the political climate.”

Through partnership with the media , NCIC aims to leverage their far-reaching influence to amplify stories, ideas, and experiences from diverse age groups. From perspectives of seasoned elders to the innovative ideas of young people.
In conclusion, NCIC chairman noted that this is the first time Kenya is experiencing the impeachment of a Deputy President.
He urged all Kenyans to allow the institutions that have the authority to deal with it and not take action into their hands.
