Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has appointed Aminu Maida as the executive vice president of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Maida takes over from Umar Danbatta, who assumed the position in August 2015 under the administration of former president Muhammadu Buhari.

With a PhD and over 15 years of extensive international experience in FinTech, telecommunications, and enterprise technology, Maida brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Executive Director of Technology and Operations at Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS), the central switching company of the country. Previously, he held the position of Chief Technology Officer at Nigerian FinTech company Arca Payments Network and held a senior executive role at Cisco Systems UK.

In his new role, Maida will oversee the coordination of NCC’s activities with the aim of fostering a competitive environment among operators in the sector and ensuring the delivery of high-quality and efficient telecommunications services nationwide.

This appointment aligns with the Nigerian government’s ambitious digital transformation goals, which strive to achieve a broadband penetration rate of approximately 90% by 2025, in accordance with the Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP 2020-2025).
