Naval Group has signed an agreement with Thales and KNDS to integrate their solutions into the multipurpose modular launching system (MPLS).

The MPLS was unveiled last year as an upgrade over the American RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile close-in weapon system.

Unlike traditional “one launcher per type of weapon” systems, the MPLS features interchangeable ammunition modules that can be adjusted to deploy a range of effectors such as rockets, missiles, grenades, underwater weapons, decoys, and drones.

Greater Payload, Greater Effect

The system’s greater payload capacity of 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) allows the outfitting of multiple MPLS turrets on a vessel for simultaneous deployment of different types of effectors.

The dual-axis turret can both rotate and elevate to engage maneuvering targets.

Additionally, it includes firing computers and a fire control system and can function in standalone mode or be connected to a vessel’s combat system.

Under the agreement, Thales will integrate its 70mm and 68mm rockets and Lightweight Multi-role Missiles into the system, while KNDS will provide a range of innovative munitions.

Additionally, integration of MBDA’s Mistral and Akeron families of missiles with the system is also underway.
