The Nigerian government has issued a stern warning to generation companies linked to the national grid, citing their refusal to adhere to government initiatives for free control across their generating units.
According to the federal authorities, this action aims to avert potential collapses of the national grid.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) unveiled this directive under Order No. NERC/2025/094, which is set to take effect on September 1, 2025.
This order was ratified in August by the Commission’s Vice-Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, alongside Dafe Akpeneye, the Commissioner of Legal, Licensing, and Compliance.
As stipulated in the order, any units that fail to comply for a continuous period of 90 days may face disconnection from the grid altogether.
The order clarified that the Frequency Governor Control (FGC) enables a turbine or generator’s governor to promptly adjust its output in response to fluctuations in grid frequency.
“Section 12.6.2 of the Grid Code for the Nigerian Electricity Transmission System mandates that all generating units must be equipped with fast-acting FGC capable of regulating turbine speed and modifying power output in accordance with frequency deviation emergencies, referred to as primary control,” the order partially indicated.
