Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the ruling SWAPO party won Namibia’s presidential election on December 3, securing over 57% of the vote. With her win, Nandi-Ndaitwah is poised to make history as the country’s first female president after her inauguration scheduled for March 21. However, opposition parties, led by Panduleni Itula of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), who garnered 26% of the vote, are contesting the results. They have cited issues such as ballot shortages and technical disruptions, which led to a three-day polling extension in some places, as their reasons for contesting the results. Consequently, Itula has urged the judiciary to annul the results and demanded a fresh election, rallying opposition parties and citizens to challenge SWAPO’s dominance. The opposition has until the presidential inauguration in March to substantiate its claims.
