Namibia has taken a decisive step toward digital transformation with the shift from physical SIM cards to electronic SIM (e-SIM) technology, following the announcement by Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus two months ago.
Unlike traditional SIM cards, e-SIMs are embedded directly into mobile devices, allowing users to activate mobile services without inserting a physical card. They also support multiple SIM profiles on a single handset and offer improved security for mobile subscribers.
Senior ministry officials, including Interim Executive Director, Linda Aipinge, and Director of Audio-Visual Media, Roselia Penda, were among the first to register their e-SIMs, marking a symbolic milestone in the rollout. The initiative underscores Namibia’s commitment to modernizing its telecom landscape and delivering greater convenience, flexibility, and digital innovation to consumers nationwide.
