MTN South Sudan has launched service in Abuyong Payam in Lakes State courtesy of the government’s universal service and access fund (USAF), although state officials said the network’s coverage is too limited and needs to be expanded soon.

According to an official statement on Facebook from Michael Makuei Lueth, Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, the launch of the MTN network in Abuyong Payam will be followed by another three networks in Cuebet (which is also in Lakes) and Greater Pibor to help address security issues challenging local authorities.

Makuei said the MTN Network in Abuyong Payam would enable cash transfers between the capital Juba and Lakes, as well enhance education and health services.

However, at the network launch ceremony on Sunday, Paul Chabiet – the Minister of Information in Lakes – asked the ICT ministry to move quickly to expand coverage, as the MTN network only covers around 5 km.

USAF secretary general Mabe Emmanuel said this will be addressed as soon as possible as USAF has already plans to deploy more towers and improve connectivity in Lakes.

MTN CEO Mapula Bodibe also promised to work with USAF to enhance connectivity and provide adequate supply to ensure network service is not interrupted.
