Ericsson and MTN have completed the expansion and modernization of MTN’s network in Kigali, Rwanda to extend network coverage, enhance user experience in the country, and prepare the network for the introduction of 5G.

With the expansion and modernization, communities in the country will benefit from boosted connectivity and digitization, better access to education and healthcare, and more while also supporting climate action and energy efficiency. These benefits will foster stronger social connections, stimulate economic development, and empower communities, ultimately contributing to Rwanda’s social, economic, and environmental progress.

As part of this network modernization and expansion project, MTN Rwanda has introduced energy-efficient multi-band and multi-sector radios from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio. These radios are contributing to an optimization in site footprint, reduction in energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. By leveraging Ericsson’s latest and most advanced sustainable technologies and network optimization solutions, MTN Rwanda is demonstrating decisive action to address global climate imperatives in line with MTN’s Road to Zero ambition.

The partnership between MTN Rwanda and Ericsson signifies a major step towards enhancing Rwanda’s digital infrastructure, aligning with MTN Rwanda’s goals of delivering seamless connectivity and meeting the growing demand for advanced digital services across the country.

Mapula Bodibe, Chief Executive Officer, MTN Rwanda

Our commitment to ensuring that every Rwandan experiences the benefits of a modern, connected life is at the core of this partnership with Ericsson. With Kigali’s network now fully modernized, we’re making bold strides toward a sustainable, digital future for Rwanda. This initiative not only strengthens our network infrastructure but also aligns with our ambition to drive digital and financial inclusion for all, ultimately contributing to Rwanda’s economic and social development.

Eugen Gakwerere, Acting Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, MTN Rwanda

The modernization project brings important improvements to MTN Rwanda’s network, expanding coverage to underserved areas, increasing network capacity to support more users without congestion, and providing faster data speeds for a smoother digital experience.
