In a groundbreaking trial, MTN South Africa and US-based Lynk Global successfully conducted Africa’s first satellite-to-smartphone voice call on 27 March in Vryburg, using a standard mobile device linked to a low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite. This historic connection, approved by South Africa’s communications regulator, signals a potential breakthrough in bridging the rural digital divide—especially for underserved regions where building mobile infrastructure is costly. Given that 96% of South African households rely on cellphones and rural users still experience significant coverage gaps, the trial shows promise for a future where signal comes from space. While satellite tech isn’t a silver bullet, it could transform access for millions disconnected from the digital world.
