The Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF) has announced a deal to purchase 168 trains, worth $2.9 billion, from leading firms in France, Spain, and South Korea. This move is part of the country’s ambitious plan to expand both high-speed and urban rail networks ahead of the FIFA World Cup in 2030, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The expansion aims to double the number of cities linked to the country’s rail network by 2040, connecting 87% of Morocco’s population. The agreement will see France’s Alstom supply 18 high-speed trains, Spain’s CAF develop 40 intercity trains, and South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem provide 110 urban trains. France, Spain, and South Korea will provide concessionary financing to fund the expansion project.
