Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has secured a third consecutive parliamentary clean sweep, matching a regional record held by former Grenadian leader Keith Mitchell.
Her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won all 30 seats in Wednesday’s general election – its third such victory since 2018. Mottley, 60, is the first woman to hold the office.
“We are humbled by your confidence and trust,” the BLP said in a statement. The new Cabinet is expected to be sworn in on Monday, with Parliament sitting next Friday.
Mottley said her administration aimed to stabilize the nation and pivot to growth, though the pandemic intervened. She stressed the need to safeguard democracy as Barbados approaches 60 years of independence and five as a republic.
The opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP) lost its bid to regain ground. Leader Ralph Thorne, who crossed from the BLP, was defeated in St John and alleged he was unable to vote owing to an administrative error.
Analysts said the result reflected the DLP’s stagnation. “It has to make hard decisions,” said pollster Peter Wickham, adding that the party should seek new leadership.
For the first time, foreign observer teams from CARICOM and the Commonwealth monitored the vote.
