Mauritius has recently launched a SIM card registration initiative, encompassing both new card purchases and the re-registration of existing ones. The government’s objective is to ensure that each SIM card holder’s identity is duly linked to their card.
Notably, there is no specified limit on the number of SIM cards an individual can register; however, each must be registered with its respective service provider. This directive applies to all purchasers of SIM cards from local service providers, including citizens, non-citizen residents, public bodies, corporations, companies, diplomatic missions, and tourists visiting Mauritius.
Registration can be completed during the purchase of a new SIM card. As for re-registration, service providers will collect, verify, and record information from existing card holders/users, either in-person at showrooms or online. This registration process is set to commence on October 31, 2023, and conclude on April 30, 2024, after which unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated. Despite potential challenges faced by other African nations, Mauritius’ smaller population of 1.2 million may facilitate a smoother implementation of this initiative.
