Mali’s Civilian PM Presses Junta for Clarity on Delayed Transition

Mali’s civilian Prime Minister, Choguel Kokalla Maiga, has urged the ruling military junta to engage in discussions about ending the ongoing “transition” period. The junta, which took power in a coup in 2021, initially committed to holding elections by March 2024. However, it later postponed the vote indefinitely without consultation with other members of the government. Speaking to supporters of his M5-RFP movement, Maiga expressed concerns over the lack of transparency, warning of potential instability if clarity is not restored. Despite his criticism, he praised the nation’s armed forces and emphasized the importance of unity. This call for dialogue comes amid broader tensions, with previous criticisms of the junta resulting in arrests, including that of one of Maiga’s allies.
