Bamako has suspended issuing new artisanal gold mining permits to foreign nationals following recent fatal accidents. On February 15, an artisanal mine collapse in the Kayes region resulted in 43 deaths, primarily affecting women. Earlier, on January 29, a flooded tunnel in southwest Mali claimed 13 lives, including women and children. In response, the Malian government has halted local authorities from granting new permits to foreign entities and ordered the seizure of equipment used in small-scale mining operations. This measure aims to enhance state control and protect citizens, amidst concerns that mining profits could be benefiting extremist groups.
