Madagascar’s Ministry of Digital Development has confirmed that the country’s operators will cut internet tariffs from this week, following talks aimed at boosting digital access, as reported by TechAfrica News.
Minister Mahefa Andriamampiadana said the scale of reductions will differ by operator, depending on their network and cost structures. He added that fixed-line pricing should move away from per-GB charging – which he argued penalises low-usage customers – and shift instead toward models based on speed, stability and overall service quality in line with international practice.
Operators have also renewed calls for the removal of excise duties. The Ministry said it would support such a step provided it does not harm state revenues, and stressed that any resulting savings must be invested into cheaper tariffs, improved speeds and continued infrastructure rollout.
The government said the tariff cuts form part of a broader effort to create a more accessible and competitive digital market.
