Lockheed Martin has been awarded a $214-million contract for the continued upgrade of M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) into the latest A2 configuration.

Work will take place in Texas and Arkansas, with an estimated completion date of December 30, 2030.

Apart from the US Army, the upgrade has been funded by the UK, Finland, and Italy.

The US Army wants to upgrade 225 existing M270A1 and 160 decommissioned M270A0 launchers to the A2 standard, extending their service life for another 30 years.

The UK and Finland operate a fleet of about 40 M270s each, while Italy has about 20 launchers.

A2 Upgrades

The A2 variant features an improved fire control system that enhances the launcher’s accuracy and targeting capabilities.

Other upgrades include replacing the current 500-horsepower engine with a new 600-horsepower engine, armored cab, new transmission, and system components.

The armored cabin features “energy-absorbing seats” that provide additional protection against mine blasts and improvised explosive devices.

The M270 is the tracked version of the wheeled High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.

It can employ 12 Guided MLRS or Extended Range GMLRS rockets, four Precision Strike Missiles, or two Army Tactical Missile Systems.
