The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence (MND) has officially launched a new cyber command to enhance coordination and response to cyberattacks.

Named the Lithuanian Cyber Command (LTCYBERCOM), the new military unit will be responsible for planning and executing operations in cyberspace, as well as overseeing the installation of strategic communications and information systems.

The command structure includes a headquarters for centralized cyber operations, a communications and information systems battalion, and a cyber defense command focused on information technology services.

LTCYBERCOM will complement the existing National Cyber Security Center, which manages cyber incident responses and strengthens resilience across government agencies and critical sectors.

“The Lithuanian Cyber Command is critical as an enabler of military planning and action coordination in cyberspace,” MND Vice Minister Tomas Godliauskas explained.

“Strengthening cyber defense and effective cyber incident management are cornerstone steps in protection against emerging threats and national security of the state.”

Increasing Threats

Cybersecurity threats have surged in recent years due to escalating regional and geopolitical tensions.

Lithuania’s neighbor, Russia, has reportedly conducted numerous cyberattacks on Ukraine’s allies, aiming to create divisions and promote anti-war sentiment.

In 2023, Google reported a significant increase in Russian cyberattacks targeting NATO countries, coinciding with Moscow’s invasion of pro-Western Ukraine.

In response, NATO has established a new cyber defense facility in Europe to protect member nations from sophisticated digital attacks.

Lithuania has been a NATO member since 2004.
