Libyan authorities have imposed strict regulations on rap music, citing its violation of moral values in the country. Both the eastern and western regions require artists to obtain approval from the respective ministries before performing, restricting content seen as rebellious or immoral. This clampdown recalls previous cultural repression during Gadhafi’s rule when rap was banned. As Libya faces political and social instability, rap music, once a voice for youth expression, now faces heightened censorship. The crackdown is linked to the rise of Salafist ideologies and increased government control, threatening artistic freedoms. Social media still provides an outlet for artists.
